AAC Language Lab – Excellent Resource for AAC implementation

This site is developed by prentrom to promote their Products and Unity langauage but they are kind enough not to restrict this only to their users but released it to the entire world. They are built in  Language development stages. This is based on the research they have been doing and the experience they gained.

What is in it?

  1. Excellent charts to show how the language can be taught in stages to AAC users for that matter anyone struggling with it.
  2. Detailed instructions on how to teach skill.
  3. Books/Material that goes with it.
Well worth the effort to review what they have and use it for your kids.  No need to reinvent the wheel 🙂

verbally – Best and most cost effective (FREE) Word power app for iPad

Verbally is by far the best AAC app that I have seen except it doesn’t have any support for icons. This leaves lots of younger kids out but this is one of the best and low cost solutions for kids who are older and can read text and people who lost speech due to other reasons such as storke or accidents. No wonder this is listed under medical instead of educational apps. I don’t know how they can offer this FREE but it is. I know there are other AAC apps on iTunes that sell this as an add on feature to the picture version for the kids who graduate from the picture versions. This I think is equal if not better than the other apps out there.

Checkout FREE apps on this site. Like us on Facebook.

How it works? The app has pre-set words in the top section called ‘word grid’. You can select the word from this similar to the way you select icons on any other AAC device.  Users can enter usign this and the ‘predictions bar’ predicts the next words that the system predicts you will use and you can use that prediction to continue unless you can’t find your word you are looking for over there. Then you will pick the next word or type. As soon as you type the first letter the prediction bar will change to give you new predictions just like any other word prediction software.   There are also pre-set Phrases that user can use without typing anything. You can let it speak each word as you type.

Alternative uses: I tried to type the above paragraph using the app on iPad and it did a pretty good job predicting the words. May be we can use this for students struggling to write.  Word prediction may help kids get the support they need to complete a sentence.  I will let the remedial specialists figure it out.

  • Very little customization available.   Needs lot of work in this area. I assume they will have some already planned.
  • The only customization that I was able to find is related to keyboard layout (QWERTYor ABCD)
  • Ability to customize key phrases (ex: My name is ‘___’) s. Users may want to add their own key phrases.

  • If you can add pictures to this then it will be a complete AAC and it also helps with kids with other disabilities (autism) that need picture supports

Overall this is a great and we thank Intuary for bringing out this app for the community. May be you can find funding from non-profits and make this even better product.

Conversation Builder – Excellent tool to encourage conversation

Checkout FREE apps on this site. Like us on Facebook.

Conversation Builder: This is designed to help the kids practice the conversations using a picture and a script.  Student will be presented with a picture and then few choices on how to start the conversation. Student should be able to read (or an adult will read) and understand the choice and select an appropriate answer. Then a recorded voice responds appropriately.  Then, it will go to the next step.  These are 4-8 exchanges depth.  When once the conversation is done, students can listen to the whole conversation.  They can save it for the therapist review or email it to someone.  See the video from the developer to get a better idea how it works.

This is actually an engine that can generate unlimited number of scenarios. Looks like, to make everyone’s life easy the developer created the scenarios and including them in the package. But the real value of this app is in the engine. If the developer allows, others can help develop the scenarios which in turn will increase the number options available for the students.

This application is done beautifully with enough scenarios that student normally encounters.  Students are interacting with other person (even though it is pre-recorded).  This will eliminate the anxiety students will normally face during the peer-peer interaction.   Of course this can’t go on forever. They need to graduate from this to real world conversation during speech or other adult supervised situation.   There are other package options you can buy to add more scenarios.

The app collects the students name and other personal info so it will customize some of the responses with the info collected.  The funny part is I entered ‘test’ as my name and in one of the conversations it asked to say my name is ‘test’ 🙂 .  When I tested the kids had fun doing this. They looked at it as a game rather than a conversation.  So that is very good. I think if the kid can’t read and comprehend then this can be very tough for them. So, make sure you watch the video and talk to your SLP before buying it.

Tip: The app can archive all the conversations if the user chooses to. This may allow SLPs to give home work and review them during the next visit or do the alternative sessions virtually reducing the cost to parents.

Issues: No issues found at this time.  Everything worked as advertised.  The numbers of scenarios are around 40 with the base pack you buy and if the kid is good they can go thru these very quickly.

Wish list:

  • Although the scenarios selected are appropriate, SLPs/Teacher/Parents may want to create their own scenarios that are appropriate for their kids/students. Fortunately, it appears the app is designed that way.

Talking Tom Cat – Incredibly funny yet very useful as reinforcer during ABA

Update: My facebook friends informed me that there are other options available if you don’t like the cat. Here is a link to all Talking animals.  Talking Gina the Giraffe and bacteria are FREE. Others are not. But the concept is the same so try FREE ones first.

Tom cat repeats what you say in a funny way. Kids love it. If you don’t say anything it yawns which makes kids to talk more.  If you tap on it, it will pretend like it is hurt and falls down.  In ABA this can be used as reinforcer or to get the kid to vocalize. It is better to give instructions suing signs when you are using this so it doesn’t repeat your instructions ina  funny way. Some times that helps too. Whatever you use this is very useful tool in your tool box and it costs nothing to have it except space on your IOS device. Enjoy!!!

Notes from Developer

See. Touch. Learn.(FREE) – Most Flexible tool(app) available for Educators especially for ABA Programs

Like what you see? Like us on Facebook so you will get the updates instantly. Also check out our FREE/Discounted apps page to get the full list.Initial Impression: This is advertised as Picture cards app. But I think this is more than that. This is by far the most flexible app that I have seen so far (AlphaBaby is other one).  You can pretty much do entire ABA Discrete trail drills using this one.

This not an app but a tool that allows you to build so many programs on your own, the possibilities are endless. I haven’t not seen such as flexible program after CrickSoft’s Clicker.  It is engaging and will allow ABA therapists and Parents to customize and build lessons.  Pre-school teachers can build several teaching programs using this app. I like this over Clicker because it is on IPad and it takes advantage of all the features of the iPad. Specifically touch screen.  This comes with the core program they call ‘See. Touch. Learn’ and sample picture library and sample lessions. Everything that comes out of box (or should I say out of iTunes 🙂 .

The best part is this is FREE. I sincerely thank Brain Parade for offering this.  You can customize it the way you want it with the help of the sample lessions and pictures. You can do a lot of programs with what you get with the app.  The lessons that come with it are developed with lot of thought and it gives you ideas on how to develop your own.

The other categories of pictures are available via inapp purchases. They include Letters, Numbers, Body Parts, Pets, Food,  Fruits, Vegetables.   You can just download the FREE verson, use it with your kids/students and start buying one picture library at a time so it reduces the cost.

Other Creative Uses (I will be adding more as I see it):

  • You can use this as a choice app so your kid can use it to select what he wants. It is very easy to customize so you can build the choice board

  • The voice is not clear. Don’t know if it is because of my device.

Wishlist: The app is very good as it is. But here are some of the enhancements we would like to see in this app. These are in the order of priority.  I will be adding more as we use this app.

  1. Give an option to randomize. Kids on ASD will remember the order quickly and start answering from memory.
  2. Allow users to upload their own pictures. May be after they purchase certain # of picture libraries the developer should allow users to upload their own. There are so many lessons that I can write with my own pictures you can’t do it with any library Developer can put together (ex: Teach identification of family members, Locations kid visits etc… I can go on and on about this list)
  3. Add a setting to say the instruction automatically instead of someone pressing it so it is customizable based on user preferences.
  4. Allow parents to share their lessons. You can create an online community where everyone can upload their lessons allowing sharing and reduce the amount of time for develop new lessons.
  5. Give an option to have the user answer the question and click ‘submit’. In my case, my son clicked on 2 and he was going for the 3rd one which wrong but the app already declared he is complete. This may good initially but to build confidence it needs have the submit button.

Please add your issues/wishlist below. I will update the blog accordingly.
