Here is an excellent resource that I found for windows users. This is from creativesupports by Jane Ricard. You will learn an thing or two from this tutorial.  I didn’t know you can do animations with powerpoint.

Automatic speech for PowerPoint presentations. PowerTalk is a free program that automatically speaks any presentation or slide show running in Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows.
WordTalk – A free Windows text-to-speech plugin for Microsoft Word,

It will speak the text of the document and will highlight it as it goes. It contains a talking dictionary and a text-to-mp3 converter.
